CARACAS (AP) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro broke on Wednesday heading to China, where he hopes progress on new agreements in the field of trade, energy and finance, among others. In a surprise appearance from Simon Bolivar of Maiquetia international airport, Maduro announced his trip to Beijing in radio and television. He said he hoped to deepen the “extraordinary relationship” with the Government of his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
“We are going in a better position,” said the President to ensure that the economic plan that triggered in August represents an important endorsement for his Government.
Maduro traveled to China in 2015 after a violent anti-Government protests. The President launched last month a plan to cope with hyperinflation, shortages of goods, the recession and an important tax deficit implied by a currency redenomination, an increase in the minimum wage of more than 3.000%, an increase in the tax to the value Aggregate and a unification of the exchange rate which represented a strong devaluation. Rejecting the program, some analysts warned that the measures could enhance economic problems, notably inflation that jumped in August to 223,1% and reached an annualized rate of 200.005%, according to estimates that the National Assembly, which controls the opposition.
