The main difference between common cigarette and the electronics is that it does not generate combustion, avoiding the process that activates carcinogens, including tar.
What happens in the United States?
From 2016, there is an exponential growth in the use of the electronic cigarette among adolescents. In particular, the product of a brand that is raising millions of dollars: Juul.
Juul is an electronic cigarette different from the rest. In addition to higher concentrations of nicotine, its design allows young people associate it more with a technological fashion and accessory not so much as a replacement for the traditional cigarette.
The phenomenon of Juul was that teenagers who were not consuming cigarettes, also began to use it, generating the ‘epidemic’ that worries the U.S. Government.
Why is prohibited in Argentina?
In Argentina, it is prohibited the import, distribution, marketing and advertising any accessory or device is needed to use both the electronic cigarette.
According to the national administration of drugs, foods and medical technology (ANMAT), none of the studies is conclusive on the adverse effects of the cigarette in the medium and long term, since devices provide, inhaled steam, one the amount is uncertain of nicotine and other toxic substances.
From research, electronic cigarette may cause some smokers to stop the habit in the short term but there is no evidence comparing it with the authorized treatments.
The contribution of toxic substances from electronic cigarettes may favour the introduction to tobacco never smoked those conventional cigarettes. Particularly in adolescents who use them as a recreational element.
Despite the prohibition of ANMAT, it is very easy to get an electronic cigarette in Argentina on the internet or even in public.
What’s the difference between us?
The Federal Administration of food and medicines from the United States (FDA) gives manufacturers two months to take measures that prevent minors to buy them. If they do not control it, they may prohibit their sales.
Unlike the ANMAT, FDA does not prohibit, but rather regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, advertising, promotion, sale and distribution of electronic cigarettes. In fact, these devices, are seen as a less harmful for adults who are unable to quit.
From 2018, all products containing tobacco need to carry a mandatory warning message about the dependence to nicotine on packages of products and advertisements.
U.S. has prohibited the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors. Locals who do not respect the rules can be fined up to 11,200 dollars for each violation.
