Most young children, 70%, were vaccinated against everything. The new calculation is based on the finding that, in 2017, 1.3 per cent of the children born in 2015 had no vaccine. It is an increase over the 0.9% of a similar calculation of children born in 2011. A survey of 2001 with a distinct methodology indicated that the proportion was around 0.3%. Younger children are particularly prone to complications from preventable diseases with vaccines, some of which can be deadly.
The most recent numbers were taken from a telephone survey last year taken the parents of about 15,000 children between 1 and 3 years. The calculation of 100,000 refers to the status of immunization in children born in 2015 and 2016.
A separate CDC study found that overall rates of vaccination for children attending kindergarten are stable, with about 95% fully vaccinated. Pollsters not asked the parents why not vaccinating their children.
It is not clear what happens, but one factor could be the wrong interpretation of parents about the safety and importance of vaccines, some experts said.
