translated from Spanish: The tobacco industry in search of its fourth transformation

refreshments without sugar. Sausage low in salt. Bread without gluten. They are amendments made by the food industry to meet the needs of a consumer that is increasingly more concerned about their health. They are also interested in the environment that will look for an electric car or even prefer transported in bicycle or scooter. Others, they even installed solar panels on his roof and placed light sensors that turn these off in empty rooms. And corresponding industries will perform innovations to address these needs.
But there is a deeper change in the business sector that the World Economic Forum pushes from 2016 as the fourth Industrial Revolution, concept coined from the influence of technology in the manufacture of all products we consume. The concept goes back to the first Industrial Revolution with the steam engine. The second industry transformation occurred with the use of fossil fuels; the third revolution digital in the middle of the last century and, currently, we live the dawn of the industry 4.0, on the coast of what will be the Internet of things (IoT) where machines can communicate with each other through sensors and bluetooth. It is not so distant future, just so it is as it is can rent a scooter to street, with only scan a code from the cell phone to unlock the padlock that electric skateboard. Even the term “Fourth transformation” has migrated to politics based on historical tipping of the country.
How land use 4.0 and the fourth industrial revolution in a sector as complex as the tobacconist? The first milestone of the tobacco industry was when they started to produce cigars massively. The second, when the filter and menthol versions opened new market segments.  The third time, when it modified its advertising and packaging to warn of damage to the health of their products. The truth is that each rollover is anchored to the technological advance, the scientific evidence and/or to the demands of consumers, therefore it is an industry that has also had to get on the circuit of intelligent consumption.
In the last decade, said Moira Gilchrist, Vice President of scientific communications and public of Philip Morris International (PMI), the tobacco industry has been engaged in research on different devices and products that allow you to follow offering consumption less harmful to health, as international experts and companies recognize that, although nicotine is addictive and is not safe, is the burning of tobacco the main cause of diseases related to the consumption of cigarettes. It is precisely this kind of products which do not burn tobacco or liquids, ranging from electronic cigars and snus until heated tobacco, which is known as “alternative products” or “alternatives”.
The tobacco industry agrees and pushes its own “fourth transformation” by offering alternatives to traditional cigarettes, but without losing the ludico-recreativa experience offered tobacco to the human being, for centuries. The regiomontano writer Álvaro Ruiz Abreu “Tobacco, smoke and destruction” thus describes it. Concludes: “tobacco has too many relationships with men that are impossible to list in this space because they are so extensive and deep that they are without limit”.
They are these complex relationships that now drive the fourth transformation of tobacco consumers. Some will choose the best option that is not smoking or consuming nicotine, but those who want to continue to do so require innovation that will help them to continue consuming nicotine with less damage to their health, as it is the case with those who take soft drink without sugar, eat sausages low in salt and buy bread without gluten.
With #futurosinhumo we want that adult smokers to choose products with less risk to health that these products, and the cigar today, are not sold legally in Mexico.
10 years in the country were implemented the General Law for the Control of tobacco (LGCT), Animal politician and Philip Morris Mexico joined the debate with new elements on the control of tobacco with serious, scientifically proven and verifiable data.
Smoking is a public health issue. Campaigns of health in the field of tobacco have three strands: prevent that new users there are, look for current smokers to stop smoking and protect non-smokers.
In this space are put on the table various approaches and innovative proposals that complement the efforts of health until now existing and put adults who have decided to continue with the consumption of nicotine in the center of the discussion.
If you are worried about your health, do not smoke or use nicotine.
