translated from Spanish: Fines for those who dirty beaches, rivers and national parks

Cigarette butts, plastic, even food scraps, are some of the unpleasant surprises that vacationers are found, and that damaged the environment in rivers, lakes and beaches in our country. But this could change as of this Monday.
The official journal published the law – driven by the Ministry of national property – amending the Penal Code to punish with fines that range from 1 to 4 units tax per month (UTM) – from $48.353 to $193.412 –, those dirty, dropping or abandon waste, materials or waste of any kind in beaches, banks of rivers or lakes, national parks, national reserves, natural monuments or in other areas of biodiversity conservation declared under official protection.
“This tool allows us to care for the places where many Chileans enjoy the holidays and punish those who don’t. All want to enjoy our day of rest in a clean environment,”said Minister of national property, Felipe Ward.
The new body of law seeks to discourage the pollution of beaches, rivers, lakes and national parks, by its visitors. “The idea is to punish a single bad habit that has repercussions and detrimental to the community in general. This law seeks to educate the public in the care of the environment”, stressed the Secretary of State.
This law of care of sea shores, rivers and Lakes joins the campaign “who will not miss you Beach”, launched by the Ministry of national property into all Chile last week, and seeking citizenship is informed about their right to free access to the beaches of the country.
Because it is an amendment to the criminal code, the control corresponds to Carabineros de Chile (it has responsibilities for identity check and attend parties), while the material application of fines is attribution of the courts of guarantee, after the the public prosecutor’s Office indictment.
This draft law was initiated in motion in 2012 by a group of senators, promoted mainly by the now Minister of mining, Baldo Prokurica.
