The brightest Comet of the year is about to appear in the sky, it’s the Comet 46 p / Wirtanen, to reached “perihelion”, which is the part of its orbit closest to the Sun, before passing near the Earth on December 17.
You can see both events online and you could even see the object in the sky at a glance if you’re lucky and the weather is good enough. The gigantic object has more than 1 km wide, but definitely will not reach Earth.
It will be extended to a distance of seven million miles on December 17, but will continue to be visible in the skies for several days later.
The astronomer Joseph Rao said that it would be possible to see it, but that the comet will be very difficult to detect. “In fact, under a completely dark, light pollution-free sky, the best instruments to locate the Comet perhaps their own eyes. “I think that the majority of those who finally located it in binoculars or telescopes described it as a cloud nearly circular, comparable or rivaling the Moon in angular size and seeming a bit brighter and more condensed near the Center”.
