translated from Spanish: Shared responsibility, a practice in favour of the environment

ECOCE is, in Mexico, the main promoter of shared responsibility in the field of recycling plastic bottles. At the same time that it encourages social and economic benefits the main objective is ecological preservation.
by the mid-1980’s, when in Mexico plastic began to replace the glass in the manufacture of bottles for soft drinks, water, juices and other kinds of drinks, nobody imagined that what initially was considered a very practical idea become a seven-headed monster that would categorically to the deterioration of the environment.
Today the world spends annually, 17 million barrels of oil in the manufacture of plastic. Of this production, a large amount is used for the production of bottles, of which, according to information from the United Nations, in the world every minute are bought a million pieces.
Although this material has a lot of valuable uses, humanity has become dependent on the plastic due to different benefits: it is more efficient for the distribution of products, preserves food longer, reduces fuel consumption and tire wear and is safe, which, moreover, has brought environmental consequences. Faced with this situation, which of course involves all sectors of society in the world order, several initiatives to reduce polymer contamination have been implemented.
One of them, which in Mexico has taken particular relevance, is the initiative called shared responsibility, which seeks to involve both civil society and the private and governmental sectors in an understanding and conception about the management and recycling of containers and packaging.
Promoter primary of this initiative, which at the same time promotes the social, economic and environmental behind shared responsibility, benefits is the non-profit ecology and Empresarial commitment (ECOCE), which was driven by more than 400 brands of the Food and beverage industry to collaborate in the preservation and improvement of the environment through the recycling culture.
“The obligation of industrial and commercial enterprises to help the recovery of its used products met it through the operation of an organisation that complies with these obligations at the national level, on behalf of their companies or members,” explains Jorge Trevino, director general of ECOCE. “Shared responsibility, facilitates and contributes to the recovery and recycling of waste containers in the most economical and environmentally correct way. Of course, pointing out that responsibility is not only the industry, but of all sectors”.
At the end of last year, ECOCE launched a new appeal to consider the environmental, economic, social and cultural benefits that provides the appropriate management of waste containers and packaging.
In this regard, with the purpose of involving civil society, Government and companies in a new understanding and conception about the management of waste plastics, ECOCE stresses the importance that all Mexicans are responsible for what you buy and They discarded.
In addition, to accept the need for a responsible consumption and an adequate management of the residues that each who generates in your everyday life. “It is important that each party understands that the environment belongs to everyone and that, if a party does not what it deserves, it will directly affect the ecological balance”, refine the steering.
