WASHINGTON (AP) – in an affirmation of the authority of the Congress on the power to declare war, the House of representatives approved a resolution on Wednesday that would require the Government to avoid that tr U.S. takeovers to become involved in Yemen, in a rebuttal to the Alliance of President Donald Trump with the coalition led by the Saudis that is behind the military intervention in that country. The legislators, Democrat and Republicans are increasingly uneasy about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and skeptical of the American Association with this coalition, especially in the light of the role played by Saudi Arabia in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, columnist for the Washington Post, who used to criticize the Royal family. Approval would mark the first time that the Congress is based on the resolution about powers of Guerra, established decades ago. It would also pave the way for a potential confrontation with the White House, which has threatened to use its veto power. The House of representatives voted 248-177 in favor of approval of the measure, sending to the Senate, where last year was authorized a similar resolution.
“We have helped to create, and to make it worse, the world’s largest humanitarian crisis,” said democratic representative Barbara Lee during the debate. “Our participation in this war, frankly, is shameful.”
Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel, Chairman of the Committee on foreign relations of the House of representatives, said the vote shows how the “Congress is claiming its role in foreign policy”.
The Senate approval would facilitate a confrontation with the Government _seria the first veto of Trump_ around the changing approach of the President on foreign policy.
Lawmakers stand out that Trump wants to withdraw troops from the wars in Syria and Afghanistan as part of its “United States first” approach, but it has shown less interest in limiting the country’s role in White House Yemen.La said that the resolution of the House of Re representatives is “defective” because American troops are not directly involved in military action in Yemen, where the coalition fighting rebels backed by the huthi a conflict seen largely as a war involving a the most dominant Middle East countries and in which the influence is disputed. From 2015, the Government says, the United States has provided support to the Coalition, including intelligence and, until recently, information supply of fuel in the air, but has not had forces involved in “hostilities”. Congress has not invoked the resolution on powers of Guerra, which requires the approval of military actions, since it was instituted in 1973.
