New Jersey.-authorities at the port of New York and New Jersey have seized about ton and a half of cocaine in what authorities called the largest seizure of cocaine in e l port in nearly 25 years, and the second largest of all time. The drugs were found aboard a shipping container that entered the United States. From Buenaventura, Colombia, last month and have an estimated $77 million dollars street value. The drugs were discovered in the port of Newark once authorities detected an irregularity in the pin used to close the doors of the shipping container, according to the Special Agent Erin Mulvey of the division of administration of New York’s Drugs in the United States.
“It was the pin that indicated that something was off,” Mulvey told CNN. The authorities opened the shipping container to discover 60 packages that contained a white powdery substance that later gave a positive test for cocaine. Mulvey said that there was a legitimate shipment of dried fruit behind the packages and that drugs were probably loaded near a set of doors so that they were easily accessible to the smugglers.
The ship was headed next to the Belgian city of Antwerp. Mulvey said it was not clear whether the drugs were intended to remain in the United States. Or continue in Europe.
