Both on the banks of the PS and PPD deputies, spoke Ar of DC continues to provoke hives. Is that they have not managed to pass the bitter drink that left them the last hang of the party led by Fuad Chahin in the Chamber of Deputies with the idea of legislating the government’s pension reform, which threw overboard a new attempt by the opposition to try to act R as a block.
The annoyance is intact, the fractures are evident, no longer hidden and all agreed that the way to relate to the party of the Red Arrow should change, but the truth is that the fear of suffering a new defeat in the upcoming municipal elections and also of governors, forces them to cool their heads: even if “wadding” says one thing – they recognized –, there are no political times or conditions to make radical decisions.
Thus, beyond the public bickering and gestures as having excluded the DC from certain coordination meetings, the truth is that in the former new majority are doomed to continue sleeping with the enemy.
On 16 May and after a last-minute offer, the government – with the votes of Christian Democracy and the Radical party – succeeded in approving the idea of legislating one of its pillar reforms and also replicating what happened to tax reform.
The new lift Democrat, despite the long work of coordination between all ex-new majority former members, led several parliamentarians to yelling the “end of Time”. The PPD head of the bench had already noticed, Andrea Parra, when the first of the breakups occurred – “The decision of the DC will have consequences” – as well as the chief of Bench PS, Manuel Monsalve, who was in favour of “a coherent opposition force without The DC. ”
But the truth is that, so far, on the part of either party there were great definitions.
In this context and without a real threat in the middle, the DC has continued its course without great obstacles to carry forward the thesis that was imposed since the landing of Chahin to the presidency of the Phalanx: that of, rather than concretizing a strong opposition , make the red arrow a “hinge” party, a necessary element, a relevant actor, to survive politically. In an interview with the third, the helmsman made it very clear: “I am not available to go into history as the one who condemned the DC to irrelevance.”
Add to that the words in the mercury of Deputy DC Gabriel Silber, who explained the current state of the opposition: “They set the basis for a new design opponent, with two different projects (…) Obviously we are not indifferent to have political relations with the opposition, but we will accept it as costs of fulfilling our political responsibility. ” From that came two conclusions in particular: that the DC landed its way and that the talk of being “responsible” further widened the gap of understanding.
In the PS, in specific, there was no match definition about what to do with DC. Some blamed President Álvaro Elizalde, while others understood that this is a definition that must be settled once the internal election of Sunday 26 is resolved.
That did not prevent the Bank of Deputies, on their own, to talk on several occasions of the matter and look at three positions on how to confront the uncomfortable situation with the phalanx. There are those who claimed to be in the obligation to redefine the role with DC, others believe that their other strategic partner must pay the political costs around the policy of alliances and are those who pointed out that they should seek “novel ways” to follow Interacting. The truth is that, as socialist deputy Fidel Espinoza pointed out to the counter, in the collective “We are not in a political position to take this situation further.”
The socialist inmates of this Sunday will not be harmless. Although there are few who believe that neither Elizalde nor his opponent, Congresswoman Maya Fernandez, would have the conditions to carry out a more radical political definition in this conflict, there are those who tried to subordinate the definition in the continuity of the Policy of agreements from the broad front to the DC, as the current directive was mandated, versus what would be the search for a new stance of alliances.
Socialist Deputy Leonardo Soto – who supports Elizalde – said that “the PS error has been to join this debate, simply by holding a refusal or a no to the proposals of government, but revealing a certain inability to raise its own alternative proposal That makes sense to citizens (…). Without a doubt we have to make a review of our view towards politics, we must make a redefinition of the tactic that the party announced, which certainly has not given any results. ”
In the PPD, the future relationship with DC was discussed repeatedly at the level of directive and one of the conclusions was that there is no doubt that the trusts were depleted, that distrust was not installed only at the level of banking, but this time penetrated H Asta the high spheres of the party, which was “finished the fluid relationship” that had with the phalanx and, that the leadership of Chahin has been a great factor in it. But in the store the dilemma is the same as among their PS pairs, because despite the inconvenience or discomfort, they recognized that “We do not project a political future without the DC, has not reached that point.”
Congresswoman Parra told the counter that “we will continue to work together, but without the DC or PR at the level of coordination of heads of the bank at least, and when necessary, we’ll talk (..) The political scenario needs to be waxed. ”
For the director of the Center for Political Analysis of the University of Talca, Mauricio Morales, Christian Democracy must make the strategic decision to form a new coalition of center with the PR and citizens, and if the PPD wants it, too. “Repeating a formal alliance with the PC and the Broad Front is unfeasible, considering that much of the internal process says relationship with the search for identity, if we assume that it was lost to agree with the PC and to subscribe to a government program that was not the taste of L You deputies and senators at the time, would erase with your elbow what was written by hand, “he said.

For now, the PC is concerned with what they call the “first ring of safety” and which is related to the joint work with the PRO and the Regionalist Green Social Federation. From the inside they made clear that a significant distance was installed, so since the vote on pension reform, there have been no formal meetings with their peers. While communism added that there is no decision taken to carry out a definitive court of relations, if they are clear that the electoral paths have no meeting point looking at the year 2020.
Case apart
Although the Radical party enters the same sack, because its behavior in Congress has been the same as the phalanx with the government of Sebastián Piñera, it is true that they have not been the central focus of criticism.
Thus, there are those who explain it from the liquid posture they have presented at the level of alliances since the former Minister of Justice Carlos Maldonado took over. Inside the historic party, the environment is broken: Among the old thirds as Carlos Abel Jarpa, José Pérez, Fernando Meza, added Pepe Auth, who are by the unique alliance with the DC, and the moderates that adhere to the bet of the PS, contemplating all the Opponent Spectrum.
The president of the PR is rather close to the old thirds, but it cannot come and take a definition, since the bases point to the completely opposite direction. An example of this is that the Tarapacá directive, once known as support for the pension reform, was declared in absentia. This state of tension prevented us from making more profound decisions about the way forward, so it was until today that the discussion was out of table.
At the same time and delving into the difficulty of decision-making, Helmsman Maldonado’s command is weakened, then it was known that he asked his parliamentarians to approve the idea of legislating and had only two votes in favor and all others for rejection.
