World.-an 18-year-old boy came to the hospital disoriented, with convulsions and a strong and incessant headache that had started seven days ago. The upper part of the right eye and a lack of sensitivity in one of his testicles was also swollen.
It all resulted in hundreds of worms that were housed in the brain, which caused death. The boy was accompanied by his parents, who explained to the doctors that he had suffered in groin pain all week. The first medical examination confirmed that the patient was “confused”, although the specialists were not clear yet what caused these symptoms. Two weeks later, the young man was dead.
The study carried out by the doctors who treated this boy is published this Thursday in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine. Neurologists Nishanth Dev and disengage Abbas explained that they decided, after the first visit to the patient, to perform an MRI.
“Numerous well-defined cystic lesions in the entire cerebral cortex and brainstem and brain” appeared on the screen (as seen in the image). What they still did not know was that these white marks that they saw reflected in the monitor had caused them a worm known as Taenia solium or tapeworms parasitic of pig.
