Jacobs School of Music String Indiana University Virtuosi is an exclusive group of violinists and violists between 13 and 18 years who are presented as soloists and together. 15-year-old Maya Kilburn studies with Mimi Zweig at Indiana University’s Jacobs School String Academy. He began playing violin at the age of 4 with Professor Anna Vayman, continuing with Chin Mi Kim. Maya has won first place in a series of solo competitions, including Fort Wayne Symphony, Muncie Symphony, New World Youth Orchestra, Carmel Symphony, and the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra’s “Rising Star” national competition.
Maeve Whelan began playing the viola at the age of 9 at Central Texas String Academy and joined the Pre-College String Academy in 2014. He played for two years as violist Main at the Indianapolis Symphony in the Side-By-Side program, and was the winner of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s young soloists contest in 2016.
Mishael Paraiso is the newest member of the Virtuosi of the Jacobs School of Music String Academy. He began his piano studies at the age of three, and two years later he took a violin for the first time. In his fourteen years of musical education, Mishael has won a total of seven competitions in both instruments and has had master classes in violin with Michael Ludwig, Steven Moeckel and, above all, Philippe Quint.
Phillip Hammond began playing the violin at age 4 and studied with Brenda Brenner for 11 years. In 2016 and 2017 he won first place in the young Artists competition, Indianapolis New World Young Artist Competition, in the Junior and Senior divisions, respectively.
Abigail (Abby) Ko began her violin studies at the age of 6, and in 2014 began studying with Mimi Zweig at the String Academy of the IU Jacobs School of Music. Abby has won awards at the Carmel Arts Council Young performers exhibit and at the NWYO Philharmonic and Young Artist Junior Division’s young soloists competitions. In 2017 she was the winner of her state of IMTA Middle Strings Hoosier.
William Mayhew, began his violin studies with Brenda Brenner and Mimi Zweig at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in 2012 at age 10.
Mimi Zweig is currently a violin teacher and director of the String Academy at Indiana University and the summer school. Since 1972 has developed pre-university programs for ropes throughout the United States. Mimi produced StringPedagogy.com, an innovative online teaching tool. American Public Television launched the Emmy-nominated documentary, “Circling Around-The Violin Virtuoso,” featuring students from the String Academy. Mimi has been awarded the 2019 American String Teachers Artist Award.
Brenda Brenner is professor and Chair of the music Education Department at the Jacobs School of Music. He specializes in string music education, violin teaching, and violin and string pedagogy courses. He received a BM and BME from Wichita State University, and a Magister and doctorate in violin from the Eastman School of Music. In addition to being president of the music Education Department, she is co-director of IU String Academy since 1993. Pianist Gulrukh Shakirova is one of the leading awardees in international piano competitions in the United States, France, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. He also received the state Presidential Scholarship for culture and art in Uzbekistan and the certificate of achievement of the Kansas City International Relations Council for promoting international ties between Uzbekistan and the United States.
