They are two different cats: one white and the other black that meet and fall in love with their differences. He admires the daisies, while she looks at the stars. “Gato Negro, Gata Blanca” by the Italian author Silvia Borando, is the first edition in Spanish, by Editorial Una Casa de Cartón de Limache.

“This book is born from a childhood memory that has a lot to do with colors: sometimes, in the numerous litters of kittens with classic colors white, black or gray, one of them was born of a different color that seemed to come out of nowhere … so, from this autobiographical inspiration, I built a story about chromatic oppositions and not just, using the page to represent two worlds that, at one point, end up being found,” says Silvia from Italy.
Silvia Borando (1986), the author of this illustrated album book, is passionate about colors and illustration. Degree in Communication at the Polytechnic of Milan, he now coordinates the Editorial Minibombo in the city of Regio Emilia located in the north of Italy and from there has published a long list of illustrated stories for children: “Gaviota más, gull less” (The White Ravens 2018), “A Wolf with A Lot of Hunger”, “Only a Point”, among other titles.

Karima Maluk, founder of the Editorial Una Casa de Cartón de Limache, tells how this virtuous editorial alliance was developed: “On my journey as part of the Chilean delegation to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2018 this was one of the links that were born before the event.” “My drive is to translate works of very good quality from independent publishers, and to rescue local authors from there to contribute, from Limache, to bibliodiversity and decentralization especially in areas of children’s literature (…) and with Silvia there was that tuning.”
A Casa Cartón has participated two consecutive years in this fair supported by the Book and Reading Fund and the Ministry of Cultures and Heritage, as it is part of its strategic internationalization program and seeks to generate exchanges with foreign publishers for publications and translations with an emphasis on local authors and independent agents.
Book Review
The rights management agency, Walker Books, reviews the work: “The innovative creator of illustrated books, Silvia Borando, proposes in this book a playful and refined exploration of the opposites. Black cat, is black from the tip of the ears at the tip of the tail, only comes out during the day. But White Cat, white from her whiskers to her four hairy legs, only goes out at night. He admires daisies, while she looks at the stars. But when you both feel the need to explore a world beyond your own, Black Cat and White Cat embark on a journey of discovery and meet for the first time … Visually stunning, it’s a celebration of the adventurous spirit, the new experiences, and how someone very different from you and very special, can share those experiences with you. Ludictous, bold and refined, he has been illustrated with black and white art. Each page paves the way for an unexpected (and surprisingly colorful) ending. Together, Black Cat and White Cat, create a new cat color (and it may not be gray!)”.
