U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed friday that his administration will schedule mass raids in ten cities across the country Sunday to deport «thousands» of undocumented people.
«They came illegally,» Trump told reporters at the White House. «They’re going to take people out and take them back to their countries,» he added.
At least 2,000 people in at least 10 cities are the goals
The operation targets 2,000 people in at least 10 major U.S. cities and could include «collateral deportations,» according to officials consulted by The New York Times.
The cities in question are New York, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore and Denver, according to official sources cited by THE CNN television network.
«We specifically look for thugs, but it can’t be that people enter our country without overcoming a process (…). If people enter our country illegally, we legally expel them. It’s very simple,» he said.
Trump complied with his warning
Trump threatened three weeks ago to launch the same operation, but stopped it a day before its start to give Democrats an «opportunity» to negotiate with him a change in the country’s asylum system.
In the absence of dialogue with Democrats on this issue, too complex to negotiate in two weeks, the representative announced that the raids would begin shortly after the Fourth of July holiday.
