translated from Spanish: Viña becomes the first Chilean company to reach zero emissions by 2050

Viña Concha y Toro signed on 1 August the commitment to set climate targets that cover the greenhouse gas emissions of its operations and that aligns with the global goal of not exceeding 1.5 C in the increase in the temperature of the planet. This initiative is responsible for the most recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned of the catastrophic consequences should global warming exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the report, the next decade is critical, and warns of the severe consequences it will have for the planet if that limit is exceeded.
By signing the general manager of Viña Concha y Toro, Eduardo Guilisasti, the company was transformed into the only vineyard in the world and the first Chilean company to join the select Business for Ambition group 1.5oC.
This UN-led initiative seeks to generate high levels of engagement on the part of the business world that accelerate the achievement of the climate goals set out in the Paris agreement.
In addition, through concrete and strategically planned actions the Vineyard will implement an action plan that will allow it to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
With this initiative the vineyard joins the 28 companies that have already generated this commitment in the world, such as Enel, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Iberdrola, KLP, Levi Strauss & Co., Mahindra Group, Natura & Co, Telefónica, Telia, Unilever, Vodafone Group PLC and Zurich Insurance, among others, collectively represent companies from 17 sectors and more than 16 countries.
Valentina Lira, assistant manager of Sustainability of Viña Concha y Toro, stressed: “Joining this global initiative marks an essential milestone for the Company and confirms the line of leadership that we have proposed to consolidate. As a global company we have a responsibility to contribute to building the future in which we want to live. We hope that our contribution will inspire other organizations.”
For his part, Gonzalo Muñoz, high level champion for COP 25, noted that “for Chile it is a pride that an emblematic company has signed this agreement in an act of regional leadership, is another step for its trajectory in climate action. It is an act of formal commitment to the climate that we deeply appreciate and hope will be an example for businesses across the continent.”
