In 1994, the United Nations established the International Day of Indigenous Peoples. Since then, every August 9, this date is commemorated with the aim of raising awareness of the needs of these populations.
In this context, the Violeta Parra Museum prepares an activity entitled “Dances of Rapa Nui”, which will be held this Saturday, August 10, at 12:00 hours, on the esplanade of the enclosure. The event, open and free to the public, will be run by hanga Rau O Te Ariki, which will present a sample of live music and dances representative of the island’s identity.
The UN has also proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, so the show presented at the museum will relieve the songs performed in the Rapanui language.
The objective of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, according to the United Nations, is to “strengthen international cooperation to solve the problems faced by indigenous communities in areas such as human rights, the environment environment, development, education and health.”
The activity is also part of Violeta Parra’s deep relationship with the original peoples throughout her work. The singer-songwriter valued the legacy and cultural rescue of Mapuche singers and communities residing in various territories.
