The Minister of Women and Gender Equity, Isabel Plá, together with the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín, and the Under-Secretary for Human Rights, Lorena Recabarren, shared the Day of the Child on a visit to the Women’s Penitentiary Center of San Joaquín.
At the time, portfolio holders shared their experiences and talked with the inmates and the Government’s commitment to improving Gendarmerie’s protocols and their coordination with the various services, to ensure dignity of those women deprived of liberty who are or will be mothers. The Government has proposed to advance three major challenges as a priority: to definitively consolidate equality before the law for women by ending all existing legal discrimination, to create conditions that contribute to increasing autonomy of women, and contribute to a culture of respect for the dignity of women in all spaces and to the protection of their lives and integrity, combating domestic violence without relentless. Our first step is the formation of an Inter-Agency Technical Table, for the study of the situation of children living with their mothers in prisons and pregnant women who are deprived of their liberty identify critical knots to be resolved. The Government of President Sebastián Piñera proposes public policies aimed at securing the rights of these most vulnerable groups through short-, medium- and long-term measures. It is essential to remember that in Pope Francis’ visit on January 16, 2018, to the Women’s Prison Center of San Joaquin, Mrs. Jannette Zurita asked the Pope for a very sent request on behalf of all women deprived of the freedom of Chile: “… That it intercedes for the justice system to modify the sentences of women mothers of minors, so that we can pay our debt to society without neglecting or abandoning children, thus preventing them from being the condemned later , who are currently paying a conviction that we inadvertently gave them.”
