The Whale and Marine Science Museum shared images of the sighting of marine vaquita specimens in the Upper Gulf of California.
“Despite all fatalistic prognosis, obstacles, threats and insistence of some to insist that there is no Vaquita. here we share some photos of the newly taken research cruise in the Upper Gulf to stomp the population of this iconic species, which continues to cling to life,” he said on his Facebook account.
In a statement published on their social networks they explained that they saw six copies of this endemic species that is listed as endangered, in the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-Semarnat. This is the first sighting of the year.
Scientists found three groups consisting of two marine vaquitas that were observed very close to the town of San Felipe, In Baja California, during the period from August 19 to September 3.

The cetacean sighting expedition involved the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the environmental organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the Museum of Whale and Marine Sciences, in with researchers from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur.
The United Nations emphasized that the marine species takes refuge at depths of 20 to 40 meters in areas of strong tides and is not very easy to locate although it lives in a widely located area.
It is estimated that there could currently be between six and 20 copies, therefore the importance of their monitoring and the work carried out by Dr. Lorenzo Rojas Bracho, president of the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (Cirva).

The rescue and conservation efforts of this species endemic to Mexico are contained in the Northern Gulf of California Sustainability Initiative, an action plan that is underway, which has not been fully implemented.
This initiative aims to create these conditions of environmental, social and economic sustainability and that harmonize with the productive activities of the area.
