translated from Spanish: Guanajuato polytechnic calls for safety after student murder

The Polytechnic University of Guanajuato called on the mayors of Celaya, Cortazar and Villagrán to implement security measures for their student community following the murder of student Arturo Humberto Martínez Cervantes, who was shot in the head this 9th of September, while waiting for his bus.
The rector of the institute, Hugo García, asked that there be transport routes that reach the Universedad directly, and that the nearby truck power stations have more runs at times that benefit their students.

“Considering the background to the thefts of our students, we are requesting the support of the mayors,” said the chancellor at a press conference, detailing that 2,345 students reside in Celaya; 1,438 in Cortazar and 701 in Villagrán.

“It is intended that the support is in the management and conduct of a route of the transport of the municipalities to the Polytechnic University of Guanajuato, since there is only private service, which provides few schedules that do not meet the needs of the students,” Garcia explained , who ensured that public transport companies ask for a minimum of 25 students per trip, and because they do not tie with the students’ schedules, they have to look for other alternatives that put them at risk in the climate of violence in the entity.

This Tuesday, September 10, students from the Polytechnic University joined the mourning for the murder of Arturo Humberto, and assured that leaving campus to take their transport is always a risk, as they have also suffered assaults.
“Wearing black isn’t just about the death of our partner, it’s a symbol of grief for the violence we’re exposed to every day,” one of the students told the Free Zone site.
