translated from Spanish: Government promises to ask army for information in Iguala case

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador committed himself to the parents of the 43 normalists of Ayotzinapa to engage in a dialogue with the head of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) so that the Mexican Army releases all the information available to it participation in the events in Iguala, Guerrero, on 26 and 27 September 2014.
This was said at the press conference Vidulfo Rosales, lawyer of the parents of the 43 students who suffered enforced disappearance at the hands of various police authorities, after a meeting with the representative on Wednesday 11 September at the National Palace, in the Ayotzinapa Commission for Truth and Access to Justice, which was established in January this year, was also involved.

According to the lawyer, in the face of complaints from relatives for the lack of results within 10 months of the new government being started, López Obrador also committed to two other “fundamental agreements”.
One, which he personally will lead meetings with the parents of the youth every two months, in which members of the presidential cabinet will also participate.
“In these meetings, the whole process will be monitored to measure progress, correct mistakes, and so that parents can point out which institutions are hindering the investigation of the case,” the lawyer explained.
And two, that the president will also mediate for the parents of the 43 to meet with the head of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Alejandro Gertz, to expose all their concerns and non-conformities regarding investigations.

In fact, one of the main complaints to the president, said lawyer Vidulfo Rosales, was focused on the slowness and “lack of commitment” of the new Prosecutor’s Office to deal with this case. And as an example, they said it took the Prosecutor’s Office almost six months to appoint the special prosecutor in the case, Omar Gómez Trejo.
“There is no compromise of some institutions of the Mexican State that should walk evenly to the Truth and Justice Commission, namely the case of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic,” Vidulfo Rosales criticized.
The lawyer also regretted that the Prosecutor’s Office “did not recompose” the investigations carried out by the previous Office of the Republic during the past government of Peña Nieto, which, he said, has led to the release of people detained by this case such as Gil, alleged leader of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos and accused of having a decisive role in the disappearance of the 43 normalists in 2014, who was released on 3 September for irregularities and human rights violations in his trial.

Despite the demands and demands of the normalists’ parents, they said at a press conference that the meeting with the president “was very good” and thanked the new federal government for willingness to continue researching until it found the whereabouts of the 43 normalists.
“The attitude of López Obrador, at least in his words, is to go forward to know the whole truth of where our boys are. That gives us hope, although we are also very desperate for the slowness with which work is being worked on the case,” said Emiliano Navarrete, father of the young missing José Angel Navarrete González, who added that the president also showed them his concern because time goes by “and there are still no clear answers.”
