translated from Spanish: Cancer Doesn’t Wait – The Shower

Mr. Director:
Some time ago President Piñera presented us with the National Cancer Plan and the Cancer Bill, which for us, were hopes as we would have access to decent coverage with greater equity, backed by a legal instrument.
However, this law does not advance because of lack of funding. Cancer does not rest, does not wait and becomes the second leading cause of death in the country. Therefore, it should be a priority for any government.
While the increase in cancers in GES coverage is a major progress, long-term solutions that ensure the correct implementation of public coverage for this disease are also urgently needed.
It is essential to address the pathology from an integral point of view, covering different needs generated by cancer in Chile. It is important to strengthen the pubic system, give more opportunity to patients in regions, train more oncology specialists, improve infrastructure, diagnostics and, above all, timely access to high-cost treatments, independent of the coverage or type of cancer.
As a civil society and patient society, we need a law with permanent and insured funding. The goal should always be to seek greater well-being for patients affected by solid or haematological tumor cancer. Today we have an opportunity by taking on an attitude of collaboration.
