translated from Spanish: At least 25 public universities are going to stop because of a lack of budget

During the course of this Wednesday, staff from at least 25 public universities and 45 university unions began a work stop page in protest at the lack of budget and budget-restrictiveness policies that have led to nine universities do not have the resources to pay their workers’ wages.
The nine universities in this situation are the autonomous ones of Nayarit, Zacatecas, Morelos, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Sinaloa and Chiapas.
In view of this, the National Confederation of University Workers (Contu) called for a national unemployment of work to meet its demands.

Some of the universities that went to stop in support of the institutions in crisis were the autonomous ones of Veracruz, Campeche, Chihuahua, Colima, Tamaulipas, Baja California, Hidalgo and Puebla.
In addition, workers from different teachers’ and workers’ unions are concentrated outside the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca, as well as at the Universidad Veracruzana and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo.
One of the first universities that initiated the unemployment was the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, in which during Tuesday night blankets and tarpaulins were placed outside some of the campus doors to demand more resources.
For his part, the rector of the Autonomous University of Nayarit, Ignacio Peña, this morning delivered the facilities of the university campus to the administrative and academic sectors of the Autonomous University of Nayarit to join the national unemployment.

At his morning conference on Wednesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador noted, referring to the university shutdown, that his government will not be “at the expense of blackmail.”
The representative pointed out that this stoppage is called by “pressure groups and so it is no longer the thing, it has already changed. We need to just review how much the budget of each university is, how much they received for this year, how much they are estimated to receive next year, and we are all also obliged to act austerity.”
López Obrador argued that with the current budget savings can be made and teachers prioritized and not made superfluous expenses, such as the financing of congresses, visits abroad and political tourism.
The president added that with the previous budget there was a university that “did congresses with expenses paid to all the guests, not only paid them the vimatics, they paid them to come and give a talk, exhibitors who charged the universities for it.”
And he advised universities to have more control over their overall budget. “If they had a congress every six months, then they have a congress every year; if they had 100 trips abroad, they would drop it to 50 (…) Everyone has to make a renewal, a change, in the case of universities, as in the Judiciary, autonomously, independently.”
