translated from Spanish: PPD calls for more effectiveness and less effective government in its fight against crime

A call on the Government to put on the table projects aimed at improving citizen security, with less effective and more effective measures, and with a long-term look, raised this noon the President d PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, meeting with the Senate table, headed by Senator Jaime Quintana.
The meeting, which was also attended by the president of the PS, Alvaro Elizalde, and the vice-president of the upper house, Alfonso De Urresti, addressed the latest events in La Pintana, which cost the lives of a child of just 9 months, Baltazar Díaz , who passed away as a result of a “crazy bullet.”
“We don’t want more Baltazares, not in La Pintana and anywhere in the country, and for that we need public policies with data, not just television images. We call on the Government, because we want to help, so that there is a National Public Security Plan, with cross-cutting and citizen emphasis, that reflects the good intentions that existed in the National Agreement with five axes that was signed a while ago,” he said Muñoz.
The former chancellor added that on proposals there must be gun control, work with municipalities, social policies aimed at teenagers who do not work or study, and have a National Victim Service.
“There are measures that can be implemented, not as communication measures, but by taking advantage of the political willingness to work in the long term. It must also be said that there are measures that are not effective, such as this identity check for children under 18 years of age. Over the past decade, adolescent participation in crime has declined by 31%, and in 2018 preventive checks were made to 4.8 million people, with just 2.2% of stopovers,” said Heraldo Muñoz, who concluded that “actions should be encouraged effective and non-effective.”
Likewise, the President of the Senate stated that “no one can remain indifferent to what happened a few days ago in La Pintana, and from this fact, and many others that have happened, we are facing a limiting situation. Here the effective measures do not work, what is required from the Government is to promote, once and for all, the agreements of the Security Commission to which it was convened last year.
Jaime Quintana added that what the government has promoted has been the Northern Frontier Plan, with very limited results, or the Portonazos Act, without results, to which the project for preventive control for children under 18 years is added, being that the results in the population n adults are marginal, as the PPD helmsman has already remarked.
“Here the main problem is the black market of weapons, and therefore the ease of registering a weapon is incomprehensible, we must be much more demanding in this control. Weapons are not justified in the hands of civilians today. We call on the Government, which has lost its battle against crime, that we are available to move forward on the agenda and take the security issue out of the polls dimension. There is an ethical imperative to build a state policy that transcends governments,” the senator stressed.
