translated from Spanish: Alleged Chapo lawyers thank ovid for liberation

Lawyers José Luis González Meza and Juan Pablo Badillo organized a press conference in Mexico City to thank President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, allegedly on behalf of Joaquín’s “El Chapo” Guzmán family, for the release of their son Ovidio Guzmán on Thursday after a failed operation that unleashed unprecedented violence in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
Badillo did not want to point out who he had spoken to directly or who hired him for this message. But González Meza claimed that they were two sisters of the Chapo and aunts of Ovid, Armida and Bernarda Guzmán Loera, with whom they communicated.

They did not read any pronouncements, but only said that Ovid is already in a safe place, and that the family was happy and grateful to the president and his team.
“Thank you for not being tortured, as you used to in the past, nor did you apply the escape law, or things like that that you used to get used to in the past, as in the case of Tlatlaya,” Gonzalez said.
“Then things have changed, we as lawyers are satisfied that this action of murdering the detainees is changing. We have a human president, a Christian president, a president who ultimately did not make the decision to harm Ovid,” he added.
Faced with reporters’ questions about what happened in the hours he was believed to be detained, the lawyers acknowledged that they had “almost nothing” of information, but that next week they would know more.
They also said that the Chapo family wants to apologize to the people of Culiacan and that they offer to take care of supporting the families of those who have died (officially the balance was eight).
These lawyers have been unknown to El Chapo at least twice, but they claim to represent him and his family.

In 2016, after the recapture of the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, they promoted an appeal against the capo’s extradition order, but he asked not to consider that claim and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that they were not accredited as representatives were even fined for that by a judge.
On September 11 of this year, an amparo was discarded that they promoted, in the face of the ignorance of Guzmán Loera.
Questioned on this Friday, Badillo assured that another of the king’s lawyers has tried to discredit him. He showed legal power for lawsuits and collections allegedly granted by the Chapo, issued in Tonalá, Jalisco, on 29 February 1996 under number 14908. In addition, he read an alleged ratification and extension of powers dated September 14, 2019, with signature by Guzmán Loera, although it was a photocopy.

He added that he is a friend of the Chapo and that he is his only defendant, although he charges nothing.
For his part, González Meza also said that he does not charge, because he is dedicated to defending peasants and indigenous people in the Tenochtitlán Foundation and the National Commission Lázaro Cárdenas A.C., in addition to defending the drug trafficker, and to prove his relationship with the family showed a letter with a signature – this with pen – purportedly from Guzman’s mother, María Consuelo Loera, dated February this year and addressed to the president to demand that his son return to Mexico.
