translated from Spanish: Piñera announced the suspension in the rise of public transport fares

In a statement from the palace of La Moneda, President Sebastián Piñera announced that the government will suspend the rise of public transport fares.
“I have listened humbly and carefully to the voice of my compatriots and will not be afraid to continue to hear that voice, because that is how democracies are built, and so we achieve greater unity,” said the Couldn’t, adding that the measure will require the drafting of a law “that must be very urgent, until we reach an agreement that allows us to better protect our compatriots by sharp hikes in the dollar or oil.”
Piñera further said that for this Sunday he quoted representatives of other State powers to a meeting, to discuss the situation, and that during the week he will convene a table of cross-cutting dialogue on the subject.
The Representative also said to stand in solidarity with the “problems and deficiencies” of Chileans, as well as with the “excessive inequalities that have been dragged down for decades”.
“Only together will we be able to preserve our democracy and freedoms and leave behind our problems and shortcomings,” he added.
Regarding the demonstrations in the city, which took place on this Saturday, the Representative said that “all citizens have the right to demonstrate pacifily and have good reason to do so, but no one has the right to act with the brutal criminal violence of those who have damaged more than 78 Metro stations, have burned Metro trains, inutlized terminals, and buses from the public transport system.”
The Representative also recalled that after declaring a State of Emergency, General Javier Iturriaga is the head of national defense, who “has the power to take the necessary measures” to safeguard security and public order.
