Violent theft of carriers and businesses increased at the Venustiano Carranza mayoralty in the first nine months of 2019.
Between January and February, in the mayorship Venustiano Carranza the theft of carriers with violence grew 580% compared to the same period of 2018, according to reports reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office recorded by the National Public Security System (SNSP) and analyzed by GLAC Consulting.
Five research folders were registered in the same period in 2018, but in 2019 there were 34.
Theft of business with violence in this demarcation increased 99% between 2018 and 2019, while the total crime, better known as total criminal incidence, increased by 8%.
The mayor of Venustiano Carranza of Mexico City has an area of 33.42 km2 and has a population of 427 thousand 263 inhabitants, according to 2015 data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). It concentrates museums and tourist sites and is the headquarters of Benito Juarez International Airport (AICM).
In 2019, mayor Venustiano Carranza was positioned as the demarcation with the highest incidence of robbery of carriers with violence among the 16 that make up Mexico City. It was followed by Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero and Iztapalapa.
Last year Azcapotzalco was the demarcation with the most cases of robbery of carriers with violence, followed by Iztacalco, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa and Venustiano Carranza.
In the case of Venustiano Carranza, for 2018 and 2019 it remained in the top 5 places in the transport robbery with violence rankings. The significant increase in the number of reported cases of this crime changed its position in the ranking, moving from fifth to first place between 2018 and 2019.
In 2018 and 2019, the last position in the transport robbery rankingwith violence was occupied by Milpa Alta, with zero cases.
In August 2019, the former head of the Mexico City Security Secretariat, Jesús Orta Martínez, and the head of the Mexican State Security Secretariat, Maribel Cervantes, met to establish strategies against cargo transport thefts in the boundaries of both entities.

In 2018 and 2019, the last position in the transport robbery rankingwith violence was occupied by Milpa Alta, with zero cases.
In 2019, mayor Miguel Hidalgo was positioned as the highest incidence of theft to business with violence followed by Iztacalco, Cuauhtémoc, Venustiano Carranza and Alvaro Obregón.
The previous year, Cuauhtémoc topped the ranking of business robbery with violence followed by Miguel Hidalgo, Benito Juárez, Azcapotzalco and Venustiano Carranza.
The increase in this crime for the case of Venustiano Carranza resulted in it going from the fifth to the fourth position in the ranking between 2018 and 2019. In this demarcation, the commercial sector makes up 64.5% of economic activity. The mayor’s office is home to 42 public markets, including La Merced, Sonora and Jamaica.
In mid-September 2019, it was reported that the U.S. Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City (PGJCDMX) was investigating three people for their likely involvement in violent business robbery against a convenience store located on the corner aluminium and Print streets in the colony November 20.
In 2018 and 2019 Milpa Alta had the lowest number of business robbery cases with violence with zero incidents.
The total crime incidence in the Venustiano Carranza Mayor had a sustained increase since 2015. In 2018 it recorded its highest level since 2011.
In the crime of robbery of carriers with violence in this demarcation, there was a downward trend since 2013. However, so far in 2019, the number of cumulative allegations of this crime exceeds the total of 2018.
Between January and September 2019, the mayor Cuauhtémoc was positioned as the demarcation with the highest criminal incidence. Milpa Alta ranked as the one who reported himself the least.
Between 2018 and 2019 the Mayor Venustiano Carranza recorded an increase of 7% in its total crime incidence, going from 2 thousand 663 to 2 thousand 895 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. In both years, it ranked fourth in the ranking of the 16 demarcations that make up Mexico City, so this increase did not affect its position from year to year.
The rise in total criminal incidence in this mayoralty was influenced by the increase in crimes against heritage and personal life. Apart from increases in robbery of carrier slaughter with violence and theft of business with violence, they increased the willful homicide (10%), house robbery with violence (89%), extortion (34%) and total robberies with violence (30%)
In mid-October 2019, the murder of a man in front of a stationery on Paileros Street spread in the media. A few yards from his body, an abandoned car was found with at least eight bullets.
