Mocorito, Sinaloa.- The price of peanuts in Higuera de los Vega, a community belonging to Mocorito, is currently at 11 pesos per kilo. This price is lower than last year, so producers encounter some uncertainty; add to this that rains are forecast for the next few days, which could affect the process of this product and as a consequence the value of peanuts would decrease even more. Despite the situation, peanuts are hopeful that the product will buy a better price.
The president of the peanut cooperative in Higuera de los Vega, Martín Espinoza, reported that 30 percent of the planted area is already trite. He also said buyers are giving a price of 11 pesos, lower than last year. He noted that minimally for them to have a profit this product should have been sold at least 13 or 14 pesos. This is because expenditures are increasing every year. He said that they hoped that the price would rise and have some considerable profit for this year. He added that from his point of view the picture looks complicated and difficult. The president of the peanut cooperative said that it seems that elsewhere this product sells better and the price ranges between 13 pesos. “I don’t know why we got the price of 11 pesos here,” he said. He said it is possible that this season could be stored product, as happened last season. He detailed that at the moment the largest slope that the producers of this area have is the question of rain, because rain is being forecast for the coming Monday and Tuesday.” There is a phenomenon of rains coming down this course and it will apparently affect the north of Sinaloa, among other states, and that is what brings us with a lot of slope, because possibly the pastures are not achieved and there could be a lot of depleting, because the peanut would be stained and the price would fall more so,” he said. He noted that there are about 600 producers who opted for the peanut product this season. Martín Espinoza further said that an area of approximately 6 thousand hectares was planted.
