World.- Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed concern that the situation in Bolivia could get out of hand.
“I am really concerned that the situation in Bolivia may get out of hand if the authorities do not handle it carefully, in accordance with international standards and standards governing the use of force, and with full respect for human rights,” said Bachelet, quoted in a statement issued on 16 November.
According to the high commissioner, there is “information that at least 17 people have died in the context of the protests, including 14 in the last six days alone.”
Bachelet indicated that the country is divided and that there is outrage in different sectors of the political spectrum.
In addition, the high commissioner was concerned about multiple arrests in Bolivia and in this context called on the authorities to disclose the number of people arrested, injured and deceased during the protests, as well as to investigate “with speed, impartiality, depth and transparency the facts so that there is accountability of those responsible”.
