translated from Spanish: They ask to respect planting dates

Angostura, Sinaloa.- As the climate factor plays a very important role in the higher or lower incidence of pests in agricultural crops, the Local Plant Health Board of the Valley of Evora asks producers to respect the planting dates that each planting has product, as unfortunately some are not doing so. Alfredo Castro Escalante, plant health manager, explains that permits are already being issued to establish corn corn, but some producers are taking advantage of the conjuncture and humidity of the land to at once let the corn grow grain on the cob, when it is not yet time for it, as they may not have the expected yield, plus the crop is more likely to catch some strong pest.

“It is very important that producers respect planting dates for many reasons. If we talk about maize, it can be planted at all times of the year, but of course, the yield per hectare will not be the same, because there are well marked differences. For corn as grain you have to look for the best date and right now is not the most suitable. If it is sown in September, as some are doing, they will certainly harvest much less than those who do in November or December, because September and October are not the best planting dates, as it is warmer, and the most unfortunate thing is that the earlier the they sow the crop is exposed to having serious phytosanitary problems, a lot of presence of pests throughout the cycle, such is the case of the cogollero worm, tainting worm, trips, among others. If you pass the critical stage of the first days later when it is in flowering you will have elotero worm and this makes the crop its maximum potential”, says Alfredo Castro Escalante.
