translated from Spanish: Harassment arrests at UNAM spread to campuses in other states

The nonconformity of university with UNAM’s responses to combat sexual harassment has not only not been appeased in weeks, but has spread to two campuses outside Mexico City.
The National School of Higher Studies (ENES) of León – the ENES depend on UNAM – was added yesterday with a stop page in a laboratory and three clinics that it has for students to do internships attending to the population, dentistry and physiotherapy.
UNAM itself closed these facilities after the students had decided to impede the activities. In an afternoon meeting, they decided to make sure they don’t reopen and keep them closed until Friday.
The dissatisfied on Tuesday handed over to the authorities a petition requiring the dismissal of two professors of any academic and institutional activity, identified for sexual harassment, and which were formally reported to UNAM since 6 November.
A member of the Student Committee told Animal Politician that these are two consecrated teachers, one of whom even directs a dental research project considered the star project of the School. And that he’s known for the harassment he’s deacting against students.
“At one, the kind of robe they wear for diary dropped it to see her bra. Others are given suggestive comments; for example a colleague who has a lot of hair on her arms said ‘if you’re that way, I can’t imagine how you are there.’ Comments of that style, and the two very similar teachers,” he said.
The defendants were temporarily separated from their positions as teachers. In response to the request specification, ENES replied that it would not terminate the employment contract of the teachers identified until the investigations against them were completed by 4 December.
On Wednesday, one of them had an audience as part of the investigation, which was expected to end around 3 p.m., but was extended until 7. The students did not receive information about what happened, but they fear that the confidentiality of who the girls they reported were violated, as well as having suffered intimidation that led to other women not wanting to formally report what they have suffered.
Young people also call on the School to commit to ceasing any teacher who consults, improve reporting processes, create a specialized protocol for the needs of this campus, create a legal unit that has specialized staff on gender issues, as well as give workshops with this perspective. In case of failure to meet their demands, they are calling for an activity stop by January.
Another ENES campus, in Morelia, Michoacán, has been unemployed since November 19. In their request specification, in addition to measures similar to those of other campuses to address gender-based violence, they demanded a public apology to young women who have been harassed, the dismissal of three teachers, and that questions about their sexual behaviour with students be included in the teaching assessments.
Although the management of that school already responded to the request on Tuesday, the students considered the answer “outrageous” because it does not resolve any point of what they asked for, so unemployment will continue indefinitely. The new offer is the creation of a Joint Commission with working tables.
The rectory of UNAM on Tuesday issued a statement informing the creation of eight new offices of the ComplaintS Care Unit (UNAD), including a touring company that will tour the ENES, located in León, Morelia, Querétaro capital and Merida, Yucatan.
The others will be in the five Faculties of Higher Studies (FES) —Acatlán, Aragon, Iztacala, Zaragoza and Cuautitlán, the latter, initiator of the stoppages on October 23, raised last week– in the Directorate General of the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) and in the National Preparatory School (ENP).
Meanwhile, the longest stoppage is that of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (FFyL), in Ciudad Universitaria, since November 4. Although last Friday the principal responded to the students by proposing actions to meet their demands, the couples considered it insufficient.
The faculty’s management reported that the extension of the school calendar is being analyzed to recover the classes and evaluations lost in recent weeks, and that the extramural activities that have been organized will not be considered valid, but only as voluntary, the outside-world activities that have been organized.
