translated from Spanish: Farewell to single-use plastic bags in CDMX in 2020

The holder of the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) of Mexico City, Marina Robles noted that from 1 January 2020 the use and marketing of single-use plastic bags in the capital will be prohibited, so establishments that do not abide by the measure will be awarded fines of between 42 thousand to 170 thousand pesos.
The local official, at a press conference, noted that the sanctions are not intended for citizens, as the law prohibits the marketing, distribution and delivery of such materials.
The owner of Sedema pointed out that those inhabitants who observe this type of practice on the part of the establishments may report them to the Directorate-General for Impact Assessment and Environmental Regulation of Sedema or the Institute of Administrative Verification (Invea).

“The heart of the amendment to the law is not focused on sanction, of course the law establishes it, but it is not there the engine of the modification, what it seeks is a re-education, a commitment and a willingness of a society to want to transform and have conditions of the environment that surrounds it better.”
Robles García called on the public to also find practical solutions to collect their products, and recalled that establishments will be able to make some exceptions.
“They are linked to what, out of health and health, there are still no materials that allow us to ensure that we truly meet a standard that protects people’s health,” he said.
The Secretary of the Environment argued that 128 tons of plastics are generated daily in Mexico City, while each year each family discards 650 bags, so the campaign will be intensified in social networks, as well as in the transport of the Metro and Metrobús.

The initiative of this law was presented by the deputy of the Green Party Alessandra Rojo de la Vega on October 9, 2018 and it was until May 9, 2019 that it was approved by the Plenary Congress of Mexico City.
Reforms to Section 25 of the Solid Waste Act prohibit the marketing, distribution and delivery of plastic bags to the consumer at points of sale of goods or products, with the exception of compostable ones.
It will be until 2021 when all single-use plastic items such as cutlery, mixing sticks, plates, pomostals, cotton swabs, balloons, rods, cups, lids, trays and tampon applicators are also banned.
