The Party for Democracy (PPD) joined on Sunday the petitions for resignation of the Mayor of the Metropolitan Region, Felipe Guevara, after “the serious repression actions that occurred on Friday afternoon in the Sector of Plaza Italia.” In particular, we rejected the action against a protester hit by a Carabinieri gas-throwing trolley, being imprisoned against another vehicle. The administrative investigation announced by the institution and the formalization of the person responsible is the minimum that is expected in the face of this high and criminal fact,” the party said in a public statement. In the PPD’s view, “the disproportionality of forces and resources leaves no doubt: it was a clear homicidal attempt and there were no intentions to prevent eventual dismantances. This is the consequence of the decisions of the governing authority in the Metropolitan Region in the face of citizen mobilization, which prefers repression rather than better channelling the legitimate right of manifestation.” In that line, he assured that “for the same reason, we demand the immediate resignation of the mayor of Santiago, Felipe Guevara, and the CEO of Carabineros, Mario Rozas, since it is unsustainable that both remain in their positions in the face of a fact that contravenes the recommendations by four international human rights organizations, which noted serious violations of DDs.
