translated from Spanish: Fires cause environmental contingency in Mexico Valley

The Megalopolis Environmental Commission maintained regional measures to reduce PM2.5 particulate pollution in the Northeastern Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
According to environmental authorities, three fires caused the increase of particles, two in Chimalhuacán and Texcoco, while in the afternoon another was added in the Bordo Xochiaca, all in the State of Mexico.
“The weather conditions continue to be adverse for the dispersion of PM2.5 particles in the Northeast Zone of the Mexico Valley: weak wind and atmospheric stability. Weather forecast models indicate that this situation will continue at night and early tomorrow,” the committee said.
The authorities also recalled that on Thursday, December 26, vehicles with a hologram 1 and 2 with green gumme (plate completion 1 and 2) do not drive from 5:00 to 22:00.

Meanwhile, the population in the northeastern part of the Valley of Mexico was advised to avoid exercising outdoors, not smoking and reduce the use of the particular vehicle, share it or use public transport.
The Ministry of the Environment of the State of Mexico came to report that the air quality by PM2.5 particles was extremely poor in the San Cristóbal station, in the municipality of Toluca, with 230 points.

In the municipality of Nezahualcóyotl, also in the State of Mexico, at 16:00 hours the air quality was very poor, with 169 points per particulate PM2.5.
“It continues #CalidadDelAire VERY MALA in the municipality of #Nezahualcóyotl, avoids civic, cultural and recreational activities, as well as outdoor exercise at any time of the day, as some of these activities can increase the dose of inhaled contaminants,” authorities said.

For these conditions, the Ministry of the Environment of the State of Mexico reported on actions in Phase II of Atmospheric Environmental Contingency particles in the Metropolitan Areas of the Toluca Valley and Santiago Tianguistenco.
“This is explained by extraordinary events, such as the bonfires and the burning of pyrotechnics typical of the Christmas and New Year celebration tradition,” the Secretariat said.
