Mexico.- Official Mexican Standard 051 labelling, which would prevent cereal brands such as Zucaritas and Choco Krispis, with stamps indicating excess fats or sugars, from using these “persuasive elements” of advertising.
In an interview with the newspaper El Universal, the agri-food health researcher of the Consumer Power, Paulina Magaña, explained that this new measure would affect pets such as Tigre Toño and Melvin, since it appears that these are advertising components persuasive, and because “they have been seen to be very influential for food selection,” he said.
“There is an international and national framework that says these characters have a big influence on children’s preferences,” he said.
The standard proposal would also restrict the use of toys or merchandise inside cereal boxes and, of course, the use of characters or pets in packaging, with the intention of protecting the health of children, as the researcher explained.
However, the rule is still subject to change but is expected to be as proposed.
