“11 people lost their lives and seven more were injured,” the prosecution said in a statement, which has already launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
According to reports from local authorities, victims included tourists travelling in the van bound for San Cristobal de las Casas, one of chiapas’ most visited cities.
In the accident that occurred around 8:00 a.m., elements of Civil Protection, Cintalapa, Jiquilipas arrived, as well as elements of the Heroic Fire Corps and paramedics who helped injured people.
The injured were transferred to the General Hospital of Arriaga and Cintalapa, the Chiapas Ministry of Health pointed out, while two of the deceased wore mexican army uniforms and their identity is unknown.
