López Obrador mentioned that it was a “blessing” to have consulted the town to cancel the airport of Texcoco, because it did not suit Mexico, and yes the airport of Santa Lucia.
“There are many better conditions of all kinds; just tell them that we are going to save 100 billion pesos, if we compare the follow up with the Texcoco project or this new complete airport,” he said.
López Obrador undertook a supervision tour of the works of General Felipe Angeles International Airport in St. Lucia.
Flanked by the secretaries of the National and Marine Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval and Admiral Rafael Ojeda Durán, respectively, the Chief Executive observed the facility from a vehicle.
The first point was the military track and platform which, according to the master development plan, will be three thousand meters long by 45 meters wide.
The next stop was the passenger terminal, which according to estimates of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) will have capacity for 19.5 million passengers in its 220 thousand square meters in length.
According to the master plan of General Felipe Angels International Airport, in its first phase, the building will have 34 contact positions, and in its final stage (third phase), which is expected to be completed by 2052, it can serve up to 85 million passengers in 84 contact positions.
At the end of the visit, López Obrador oversaw the works of the control tower that will have a height of 88 meters.
“It will be an example of cleanliness and design elegance reminiscent of our pre-Hispanic past,” military engineers said.
According to Sedena estimates, the air port is due to be completed on 21 March 2022. It will serve 119 thousand 571 annual operations and about 470 tons of cargo.
