Finland.- A group of researchers from Finland has developed a 3D model that simulates the spread of coronavirus that occurs through the cough of a patient who is infected. The pathogenic load remains in the air for several minutes before dispersing, according to preliminary results.
“Particles that are suspended in the air could end up in other people’s respiratory tract”
Four academic institutions (University of Aalto, Instiuto Meteorological Finland, VTT Technical Research Centre and University of Helsinki), to carry out the study, modeled – independently – a scenario where a person infected with coronavirus coughs in the corridor of a supermarket, taking into account ventilation conditions.

“If someone infected with coronavirus coughs and moves away, they leave suspended particles carrying the coronavirus. These particles could end up in the respiratory tract of other people nearby,” says Ville Vuorinen, assistant professor at the University of Aalto.
The four entities recorded the same results: the particle cloud expands rapidly from where the person coughs, diluting after several minutes. The distance the cloud travels depends on the size of the particles. In the first instance, particles of less than 20 micrometers were taken as a reference, preventing them from falling to the ground quickly. The dry cough, on the other hand, has a particle size less than 15 micrometers.
