translated from Spanish: UNAM Commission Approves Changes to School Calendar In Front of Pandemic

The UNAM Academic Work Committee, in an extraordinary session, approved the proposal for amendments to the 2020 school calendar, in its Annual and Semi-Annual modalities.
Among the points approved are that the General Secretariat of the University authorizes adjustments to the calendars of Faculties and Schools carried out by the respective Technical Councils and the Graduate Programs, so that the extension of the school year 2019-2020 is until August 21, 2020.
This is noted in the document, so that they are “allowed to adequately evaluate academic activities, both those carried out online during the contingency arising from the COVID-19 Pandemic, and those carried out in person at the end of the pandemic”.
The National Day of Sana Distance, which includes the suspension of classes, would end on May 30, although the authorities have not confirmed that at that time face-to-face academic activities would resume in areas such as the Valley of Mexico, with high levels of contagion.
“It is recommended that all activities that can be completed online during the period of the health emergency be evaluated by the same modality, thus recovering the great effort made by the Academic Entities, Students and Teachers, in order to also reduce the number of students and teachers who will return to the classroom at the end of the most acute phase of the contingency, to minimize the risk of contagion”, reads in the document.
“Those practical and theoretical-practical activities established in the curricula and academic programs, whose evaluation can only be carried out in person, will be evaluated at the end of the health emergency, during the weeks that have been added to the original calendar of the 2020-2 semester. These activities should be provided under the healthy distance measures recommended by the health authorities and which shall be in force when resuming face-to-face activities”.
Another of the agreements approved by the Academic Labour Commission, is to “recommend to the Faculties and Schools the authorization so that students who determine this, can process the temporary suspensions and registration to the subjects that they agree, derived from the personal conditions generated by the health contingency”.
The last of the approved agreements is that the 2020-2021 school year, in its modalities, will begin on 21 September 2020 and conclude on 18 June 2021 for the Annual plans and on 11 June for the semi-annual plans.
“The necessary adjustments will be made in the year-on-year and on-year periods so that the school calendar for the 2021-2022 cycle will return to the August-June period with which UNAM has operated for several school cycles and which has allowed regular periods for academic processes and entry contests to be available.”
In the calendar published on the UNAM page they appear as administrative holidays between July 6 and 24, 2020.
