Facebook agreed to pay $52 million to its content moderators whose work forces them to watch graphic and disruptive posts and videos on their platforms. In a 2018 lawsuit, the company’s external contractors alleged that Facebook failed to adequately protect them against severe psychological damage and other injuries that may result from repeated exposure to graphic material such as child sexual abuse, beheading, terrorism, animal cruelty and other disturbing images. The agreement grants the U.S. moderators who were part of the class action $1,000 each. Those diagnosed with work-related conditions will be able to receive medical treatment and damages of up to $50,000, according to the preliminary agreement filed with the California Supreme Court for San Mateo County.In a statement, the company said she is “grateful to the people who do this important work to make Facebook a safe environment for everyone. We are committed to providing them with additional support through this agreement and in the future.”
