In a new process of research on coronavirus and the struggle to fight it, the Hospital de Clínicas presented the campaign to have people recovered from the virus. The reason for it has to do with the development of antibodies that keep that human being away from a second infection. Dr. Alejandra Vellicce, Head of the Department of Hemotherapy, explained that “antibodies are natural defenses of the organism, the first line of battle against the disease. Once the person recovers, those antibodies remain in the body, more precisely in the plasma, the liquid part of the blood.”

The purpose of this protocol is to make plasma transfusions of those who have already recovered from the disease to patients who are in a moderate or severe state, officially highlights and communicates. “The expanded use for convalescent plasma in the treatment of COVID-19 patients shows results of noticeable improvement in 10 out of 10 patients in which it was used”, comments Vellicce.All those people recovered from coronavirus who can respond to this call and donate their plasma must communicate by email to plasmacovid@hospitaldeclinicas.uba.ar or by phone at 11-3614-2839 from Monday to Friday from 9 to 13 hours. The form of obtaining plasma is part of common procedures in Blood Banks and are safe. The material used during the procedure is disposable, single use, therefore, there is no risk of contracting diseases, Vellice clarifies, which further emphasizes that this technique of possible therapy has a clear and successful history in our country: it was implemented in the fight against Argentine hemorrhagic fever by Dr. Julio Maiztegui.
