The National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination (Conapred) decided to cancel a forum to discuss racism and classism following the controversy generated by inviting youtuber Chumel Torres.
Chumel’s name became a trend on Monday because users criticized the Conapred’s decision when inviting him to the forum, as they consider the driver to be in agresing different characters of public life, and Mexicans in general for their skin color, so they pointed him out as a “classicist” and “racist”.
Even Beatriz Gutiérrez Muller, writer and wife of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, questioned that invitation.
“Does this character invite a forum on discrimination, classism and racism? I’m still waiting for a public apology from this individual about the attacks on my underage son,” he wrote on his social media.
The writer accompanied her message with the invitation to the forum, in which she marked Chumel’s name and a screenshot of a video by Chumel called “The Palace of Chocoflan”, with which she referred to Jesús López, son Beatriz Gutiérrez and the president of Mexico.

In the morning, Conapred’s headline, Monica Maccise, reported that the forum was canceled in the face of the weather that had been generated.
“We know that this has generated intense public discussion, we have been listening to the public, we are aware of what has been said in the network. There are people who have said that it is good to open the debate between people who are opposed and we have also listened to allied people, experts, people who have accompanied the Conapred for many years, where they consider that the intervention of a particular participant is problematic, it is not adequate, it is not relevant at this time.”
“Tomorrow’s forum doesn’t have the right conditions to do it in the weather you see, so now the forum will be suspended to rethink it,” Maccise said in the W Radio’s Like Things newscast.
The conapred headline stated that the forum was intended as a space to boost dialogue between people with dissonant postures.
