A group of former mayors from the La Araucanía region met on Friday with the aim of discussing the conflict in the area and the hunger strike of Mapuche leaders.
According to The Third, the former mayors called on the Government to “make all efforts of dialogue to seek solutions to the hunger strike, with regard to the provisions of Convention 169”.
In a statement they said that “the situation of violence that exists today in The Araucanía is a problem of state, with each of the powers, within their powers, making every effort to ensure the exercise of the rule of law”.
In this regard, they called on Parliament to “immediately discuss all laws concerning the constitutional recognition of indigenous peoples, seats reserved in the next constituent process, Council of Peoples and Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, and the most relevant aspects established in the Commission on Historical Truth and New Treatment; and the Presidential Advisory Commission Bishop Vargas.”
They also expressed their support to the mayor of the region, Victor Manoli, “to lead the process of dialogue, constituting a cross-cutting working table that includes all mayors, especially the Association of Mapuche Mayors, Lonkos, rectors, guilds, victims of violence, Cores and former mayors of the region”, with the aim of “establishing all the mechanisms of dialogue that aim to improve coexistence and peace in La Araucanía”.
Former mayors Eduardo Klein, Luis Mayol, were present at the meeting; Ricardo Celis; Andrés Molina; Jorge Atton; Andrés Jouannet and Miguel Hernández.
