Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand referred to the declaration signed by 28 countries, including Chile, calling on all sectors of Venezuela to commit to a “rapid and peaceful transition in that country.”
Allamand expressed support for the transition process in Venezuela, which “must be expressed in an interim government that calls for free, participatory, transparent and under-surveillance international parliamentary and presidential elections.”
He also expressed the “repudiation of the Government of Chile to The dictatorial regime of Maduro and above all to its purpose of carrying out a fraudulent and unsecured electoral process in December”.
Finally, he reiterated “the commitment of the Government of Chile to actively cooperate in Venezuela’s post-dictatorship recovery process.”
In the statement, signed by Lima Group countries in addition to the United States, Estonia and Hungary, among others, they called for the establishment of an “inclusive transitional government” that “leads the country towards free and fair elections”.
They warned that “parliamentary elections alone do not present a political solution; on the contrary, they can further polarize an already divided society.”
“We reiterate the willingness of all countries that maintain economic sanctions to discuss their relief in the context of political progress.”
