Quito, Ecuador.- Ecuadorian Julio César Mora Tapia, 110, and Waldramina Maclovia Quinteros Reyes, 104, have entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-serving married couple on the planet. This was reported by Guinness World Records in a statement in Quito in which he stated that Mora Tapia, born on March 10, 1910, and Quinteros Reyes, on October 16, 1915, together 214 years and 358 days.

The couple are also 79 years married and had five children – the eldest of them who died when they were 58 – with 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Julius Caesar and Waldramine, who have dedicated their lives to teaching, also share a curious romance story that began when they were very young, around the age of twenty. According to Guinness’s account, she used to visit one of her sisters, during the holiday period, in a building in Quito where Julio Cesar lived.And that is that her sister’s husband was his cousin, and that’s how they met and earned, first, a good friendship that was consolidated with seven years of courtship, at the end of which they married.

According to Waldramine, Julius Caesar loved him for his literary potential, especially for the poetry he wrote, while he was trapped by her beauty, great heart and firm character. They married on February 7, 1941 in an intimate and secret ceremony, as, like many couples, there was some kind of resistance from their relatives to the union. The couple, attended by their closest friends, took place in the church of El Belén, the oldest in the Ecuadorian capital. They do not hide their pride of having been able to give their children a good education as their greatest legacy, for as they both agree: “Education allowed us to chart a route for all generations of our great family.”

They love to sow and harvest plants to share the fruits with family and friends, and strive to prepare dinners that become “pleasant and unforgettable” moments, the daughter noted. The couple also recounts that it was not easy, at first, their life as a couple because of the distance that existed between their respective families, but they emphasized that understanding and patience allowed to weld the bonds to become “example and the best reference for the younger generations”.

“The respect, compassion, and consideration with which we maintained our relationship was very important, we never argued or fought,” they added, although they accept that they kept away from children out of respect and love.As good Christians, they thank God for having set the record as the longest-serving couple in the world, after overcoming Charlotte and John Henderson’s American, with a combined age of 212 years and 52 days.
It is true that at the moment it is difficult because we are overwhelmed by a pandemic (COVID-19) that affects the globe and we do not yet have a path of solution, but the first step is for us to discipline, respect and love each other’s life,” the couple said.
They, according to Guinness’s account, hope that a solution to the pandemic will be found to reconnect with their relatives and loved ones.
