Ms. Marcela Hernando referred to the government’s announcement to postpone regional governors’ elections by November 2021. In this regard, the congresswoman from the Antofagasta Region lamented “that we have such a hard time moving forward with a decentralization agenda. The processing of these laws on the election of regional governors has been so tortuous and now they want to postpone them.”
Hernando, who is vice-president of the Radical Party, stated that “I cannot help but feel that it is also for the personal, selfish interests of senators that they are more likely to postpone this election, because regional governors would be authorities that would contest the same electorate in terms of districts and population volumes, so they could jeopardize the “career” of some senators. That shouldn’t be a cause for trying to put this off.”
In this sense, Dr. Hernando noted that “different is that a number of laws have not been processed that have to do with powers, for example, of managing more resources and the regional income law. It seems to me that we should move quickly on that, but to postpone this election is a second option, the first option is to put urgency in addition to the treatment of those laws.”
