“This is a partnership between governments, manufacturers and multilateral partners to continue the high-risk fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. In our collective search for a vaccine, UNICEF is building its strengths in providing vaccines to ensure that all countries have safe, fast access,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore.

Because UNICEF has been the world’s largest vaccine buyer, acquiring more than 2 billion doses a year for routine immunization and outbreak response on behalf of nearly 100 countries, being also the leading purchasing partner Gavi, the vaccine partnership, which over the past 20 years has reached 750 million children , managing to prevent more than 13 million deaths. As a result, UNICEF is the best prospect for this work of unimaginable magnitudes, in a pandemic that has taken the lives of more than 800,000 people worldwide. In this regard, UNICEF will be involved in the distribution of vaccines, as it has succeeded in realizing its participation with 28 manufacturers from 10 different countries who have shared its Covid-19 vaccine plan through 2023, so its next strategy is to ensure the financing of nations interested in the COVAX platform, to increase manufacturing capacity.
“UNICEF has been a key partner in the Alliance’s success over the past two decades, helping us reach more than half of the world’s population with life-saving vaccines. This knowledge and experience will be important to ensure that COVAX manages to acquire and deliver safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines,” said Dr Seth Berkley, Gavi’s chief executive.
