The Government today supported the reports prepared by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, on the situation in Venezuela and was “concerned” about the crisis facing the country ruled by Nicolás Maduro.” Our country will maintain its leadership in the global defence of human rights and will support the principles of peace and political resolution of the Venezuelan crisis,” the Chancellery stressed on Tuesday.
The position of this day came after the controversy generated by the opinions of the ambassador to the OAS, Carlos Raimundi, who had stated that “there is a sesathed appreciation of what human rights violations are in certain countries”. In addition, the Government anticipated that it will raise before the Council “the need to strengthen the installation of a permanent mission of the High Commissioner in Caracas”.
Later, the ambassador to the international agencies in Geneva, Federico Villegas Beltrán, stressed that Argentina “is concerned about the human rights situation” in Venezuela and supported the reports prepared by Bachelet.” Argentina is concerned about the human rights situation, as well as the serious political, economic and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, aggravated by increased economic and financial sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic,” the diplomat said.
