Democrat Joe Biden won the presidency of the United States, Edison Research and several television networks said Saturday, after voters narrowly rejected Republican President Donald Trump’s tumultuous leadership to embrace the promise of a renewed effort to combat the coronavirus pandemic and encourage the economy.
Biden, 77, became the 19est person elected as U.S. president as Trump failed to significantly expand his base beyond a committed core of rural and working-class white voters who embraced his right-wing populism and “America’s first” nationalism.
Together with the president-elect, her “number two” , Californian Kamala Harris, also enters the White House, who will become the first woman to reach the vice presidency of the United States.
Edison Research and major networks, including CNN and NBC, projected that Biden would get more than the 270 electoral college votes needed to emerge victorious in the complex state-by-state system to elect a president, though Trump’s campaign challenged the counting of votes in court and sought a re-count in a state.
