U.S.- President-elect Joe Biden appointed Ron Klain to be his incoming chief of staff, Joe Biden’s transition office said in a press release Wednesday, elevating his former assistant to one of the most powerful positions in the White House in the United States.

He previously served as chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore during the Clinton and Biden administration during his tenure as Vice President Barack Obama.

Ron has been invaluable to me during the many years we’ve worked together, even when we rescued the U.S. economy from one of the worst recessions in our history in 2009 and then overtoned an overwhelming public health emergency in 2014, Biden said in a statement.
“Your extensive and varied experience and your ability to work with people across the political spectrum is precisely what I need in a White House chief of staff as we face this moment of crisis and unite our country again.” Klain praised Biden in his own statement Wednesday, calling his new position “the honor of his life.”

Klain brings a unique experience to this moment defined by the current coronavirus crisis. The Democratic operative was appointed by then-President Obama to lead the response to the Ebola crisis in 2014.
