President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that with the case of General Salvador Cienfuegos “the prestige of a fundamental secretariat for the Mexican State, which is the Secretariat of Defense, and is not anything. We cannot allow our fundamental institutions to be quered without elements.”
At a press conference, the representative noted that if the Prosecutor’s Office finds guilt, it will be punished, and reiterated that a military man’s conduct should not stain an entire institution.

“There is no impunity for anyone and at the same time no crime will be allowed. There has to be sustenment, evidence, no person can be the victim of an injustice.”
“Was there pressure from the Armed Forces to return General Cienfuegos to Mexico, a reporter questioned the president.
“There was no pressure from anyone, we don’t admit pressure from anyone,” he replied.
López Obrador assured that there is nothing hidden and it is only about respect for sovereignty.
“We acted on principle and what was done in this case was to intervene in political, diplomatic matters, to express our dissatisfconformity at a fact that is presented and decide to judge in the US without the knowledge of our government, this goes beyond the legal. It does not mean that it is not legal, there is a collaboration agreement signed years ago. In this case he was raped, we didn’t have any information.”

“There is nothing in return, we do not make commitments that affect our principles, it is something we had an obligation to do because we felt that we had not been warned of the process,” he said.
The representative said an investigation will be launched to Cienfuegos in Mexico with information provided by the United States.
“There’s going to be an investigation. It’s not an agreement of impunity because America wouldn’t accept it and we less,” he said.
“The whole investigation is limited to the evidence sent to us by the United States Government that came to us on November 11 and there is no other investigation to which we have been informed by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, before or otherwise,” Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard explained on Wednesday.
The official stated that Cienfuegos will be transferred to Mexico as a citizen in freedom, as a Mexican citizen repatriated to our country, does not come as a detainee.
The Chancellor reiterated that it was not acceptable for General Salvador Cienfuegos to be arrested without having warned the Mexican Government, and set an example:
“Let’s get on the opposite case. Let’s assume that in Mexico we arrest, the authorities, some senior official. Now that the DEA administrator is here, let’s assume we’d stopped him. What would we think of what would happen? There would be a very, very serious impact. America would tell us, ‘This official returns it to me, or we’re going to have a serious find.'”
Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced in a joint statement with the FGR that it would drop all charges against Cienfuegos and agree to his release, in exchange for his counterpart in Mexico resuming the indegatory and, if there is evidence, subjecting him to eventual process.
A hearing will be held in New York on Wednesday where a judge will decide whether or not to accept the request to dismiss the drug trafficking and money laundering charges against the former DEFENSE secretary in the US.
